The Emerald Isle Society is committed to small, under-funded charities, and we donate all monies raised from our annual Emerald Ball to our beneficiaries. We are an all volunteer organization so all funds after paying the bills for the event can go to our designated recipients. We are always looking for monetary donations to help fund the Emerald Ball, and any silent auction items are greatly appreciated. If you wish to give to this worthy cause, please contact Susan Dooley at 722-1018.
Tucson Alliance for Autism (TAFA) and the Ulster Project for Children
TAFA is a relatively new clinic in Tucson which provides much needed services for children with autism and their families. Ten years ago one in 10,000 children were diagnosed with this mysterious disease. The incidence of autism is now approaching epidemic proportions (currently one in every 166 live births). TAFA is one of few sources for education and support in Tucson. For more information visit the TAFA website.

The Ulster Project is a program which brings Catholic and Protestant youngsters from Northern Ireland to visit Tucson teens for 5 weeks every summer in an effort to promote tolerance and understanding through friendship and fun. Several other cities across the United States also participate in this worthwhile project and host Irish teenagers during the summer. For more information visit the Ulster Project website.
National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southern Arizona (NAMIsa) is a non-profit grassroots organization providing advocacy, education and support to all those affected by serious mental illnesses. In Tucson and Pima County, NAMIsa devotes its efforts to educating the public & fighting stigma to overcome ignorance, misinformation, misconceptions and apathy that prevent true understanding and meaningful help for seriously mentally ill persons. NAMIsa advocates for legislation and funding of programs that will ensure quality community care, housing and services for people with mental illness. NAMIsa also provides support individually and in group meetings for people with mental illness and their families.
Ronald McDonald House of Southern Arizona exists to provide a home-away-from-home for families who have traveled to Tucson seeking medical treatment for their children. More than just a place to sleep, Ronald McDonald House provides a warm, safe, and comfortable home-like environment for families who are caring for seriously ill children. Ronald McDonald Family Room at University Medical Center extends our care and comfort to families both near and far by creating a little piece of RMH right inside the hospital.
Project YES (Youth Envisioning Social change) provides leadership opportunities for young people through the arts and service learning. Through their Youth Center, Art in the Community, and Service-Learning Partnership programs, Project YES empowers young people to not only envision social change, but live it, positively impacting their lives and their communities.
Local Irish contributions:
The Emerald Isle Society has supported the many and various Irish nonprofit organizations in our community. We are particularly interested in promoting projects, through both volunteerism and donation, which will spread the love of Irish culture to the children of Tucson. In the past, we have supported:
Scholarship Fund
EIS has recently established a scholarship fund from donations made specifically for to aid local families in pursuing Irish cultural arts and studies. To date, the fund has helped to pay tuition for needy families in Tucson who desire to have their children experience Irish culture through dance and music. The requirements for a funding application are available upon request - see Contact Us .
